Carl Filtsch – Chopin's Most Gifted Student and the Short Life of a Child Prodigy

Carl Filtsch – Chopin's Most Gifted Student and the Short Life of a Child Prodigy

Martin Beinicke |

A pianist and composer who died at fourteen – and whose music is being rediscovered today.

"When this little one starts to travel, I shall have to close my shop." These words came from Franz Liszt – arguably the greatest pianist of his time. He said them about a twelve-year-old from Transylvania.

Carl Filtsch (1830–1845) was no ordinary child prodigy. He was Chopin's favourite student, celebrated by Liszt, Meyerbeer and Anton Rubinstein – and died at fourteen, before the world could discover what he might have become.

From Transylvania to Paris

Carl was born in 1830 in Mühlbach (now Sebeș, Romania), the son of a Lutheran pastor. He was playing piano by the age of three – taught by his father. At seven he travelled to Vienna, where he studied with Friedrich Wieck – Clara Schumann's father – and was introduced at the imperial court as a musical companion to the future Emperor Franz Joseph, who was the same age.

In February 1841 he made his debut at the Vienna Musikverein. The press was enthusiastic: reviewers praised the "high degree of perfection" and his "artistry in tone, expression, power and shading".

In December 1841 Carl travelled to Paris with his brother Joseph – and sought out Chopin immediately.

Chopin's Favourite Student

Chopin almost never taught children. And he rarely gave his students more than one lesson per week. Carl Filtsch received three.

The relationship between them went beyond teacher and student. Chopin let Carl perform his own works – sometimes together at two pianos. Later Chopin wrote about his young pupil: "My God! What a child! No one has ever understood me like this!"

A contemporary critic wrote after Carl's farewell concert in Paris that memories of Liszt twenty years earlier had been revived, and that one might compare this boy to Mozart. In England the voices were even more enthusiastic. One critic wrote: "One must admit that the pupil has surpassed the master."

A Composer with His Own Voice

Carl Filtsch left behind a small but remarkable body of work. His piano pieces show the clear influence of Chopin – but no blind imitation. Singing melodies, subtle harmonies, romantic piano sound – and an astonishing maturity for someone who wrote them as a child.

For pianists who want to explore beyond the standard repertoire, his pieces are a genuine discovery: musically deep, technically accessible and with the particular appeal of the almost forgotten.

An End in Venice

In 1844 Carl Filtsch was taken to Venice to recover his health. He died there in May 1845 – one day after his fifteenth birthday. What he might have become can only be imagined. Liszt, for one, had no doubt.

Since 1995, the Carl Filtsch Festival has been held annually in Sibiu (Hermannstadt), Romania – an international piano and composition competition that keeps the legacy of this extraordinary musician alive. More information at filtschpianocompetition.com.
